Tylenol is a combination drug that contains two medications namely Paracetamol, and Codeine. Paracetamol belongs to the group of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that is used in the treatment of mild to moderate pain and fever. What Is Tylenol 3?
Tylenol comes in four different strengths, Tylenol 1, Tylenol 2, Tylenol 3, and Tylenol 4 which contain same amount (300 mg) of Paracetamol, but different quantities of Codeine. Tylenol 3 contains 300 mg of Paracetamol and 30 mg of Codeine phosphate.
Tylenol 3 is available in various dosage forms. The Paracetamol and codeine oral suspension is used to treat conditions of mild to moderate pain. The tablet dosage form is used to treat mild to moderately severe pain.
How It Works?
Tylenol contains 2 analgesics, namely Paracetamol and Codeine. Paracetamol is an analgesic and antipyretic, while Codeine is a natural opioid analgesic. But, the way both drug acts on the body to reduce pain differs completely.
Paracetamol changes the way the body senses pain. It works by inhibiting the enzyme Cyclooxygenase and reduces the production of prostaglandins, which are usually involved in the pain and fever processes. Paracetamol is also known to enhance the pain relieving effects of Codeine.
Codeine is an Opioid analgesic. It binds with the opioid receptors present in the Central nervous system and the Gastro-intestinal tract and causes numbing sensation throughout the body and mimics the pain.
Tylenol 3 Uses
Tylenol 3 is a prescription drug, mainly indicated to treat conditions of mild to moderate pain that Paracetamol alone wont get rid of. It is known to treat medical conditions such as muscle pain, dental pain, headache, painful menstruation, post-surgical pain, and pain after an accident. Tylenol is an one of the best homeremedies for fever.
Tylenol 3 is very effective in battling short time or intermittent pain. But, it should be used in caution due to habit-forming nature of Codeine. So, it should be taken as directed by the physician, not more and not less than the recommended dosage. Tylenol 3 should not be taken for over than 3 days in pain management, or for over 5 days for reducing pain.
